My experiences from Wacken 2008 will forever stay with me. Not bringing trousers was THE worst mistake of my life. Apparently, the only trousers they sell at the Wacken markets are leather and I wasn’t about to fork out the dosh for a pair. So I shivered the nights away. Next time, I thought as I was moments away from freezing to death (I’m being dramatic of course, it makes for a good story) I am not going to put myself in that position again. So now I am going to be smart about it and take my years of festival experience into consideration and PACK ACCORDINGLY.

Metal fashion is completely male-centric. That usually leaves us with shirts that are too big or we go the complete opposite way – fishnets and tits. I’m totally fine with women doing either but I don’t. I don’t believe that looking trashy is necessary (because not everyone loves seeing that pimple on your ass being squeezed through those fishnets). On the other hand, looking and dressing like a dude shows complete lack of self confidence.

So ladies, I hereby introduce to you someone you may know. Her name is Sarah Connor. Not Sarah Connor Terminator 2. Or even Terminator 1. OH GOD NO – THE HAIR. I’m talking Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Why? Because it’s a little more modern, it’s not slutty and it’s not too manly. It’s a perfect example of how you CAN dress at Wacken. Not just for looks but for practicality. That’s right, I’m not a completely shallow woman. If you’ve never watched the show, I suggest you activate some downloading action now. And if you have watched the show and perhaps have a few episodes legally or illegally lying around on your computer have a quick look at them now.

Sarah’s clothing is quite military (which is apparently super-duper in right now): boots, trousers, tank top and sometimes a leather jacket. There are always variations, there may be belts here or there. Her boots change but they are always boots. And she’s either wearing jeans, leather pants or pants with lots of pockets depending on the day. So here’s what you can take from dressing like a fictional character and convert it into Wacken Wear.

Layers: These will save you from the crazy weather which has been known to go from boiling hot to freezing cold and raining in not much time at all. A couple of tank tops, a shirt, long sleeved top and jacket. Easy to carry around with you and stops you having to go to your tent during the day to make (what I like to call) costume changes.

Bottoms etc: Jeans are only practical when it’s not raining. Otherwise, if it looks like rain I suggest trousers that dry easily or work the tights-under-shorts combo. It’ll also help keep your undies dry if you don’t have a garbage bag to put over yourself.

Boots: Boots are a must and the higher up your leg, the better. If it rains, you could very well find yourself in mud. Sarah usually wore boots with buckles or exposed zips but over-the-knee options are always fun. I would stay away from PVC or patent leather unless you want to look like a stripper. Sarah’s boots are always FLAT. Don’t wear heels unless you want to help aerate the grass or sink in the mud. Wedge/platform boots to be worn at your own risk (the ground isn’t exactly flat). And most importantly, make sure they are comfortable as you will be standing for long periods of time. Ones that you can pull on or zip up are the most practical.

Accessories: I am not really one to accessorize at Wacken because this requires effort and more luggage. Also, no one cares. But if you must, I would stick with belts and very minimal jewelery.

Bags: Bags at festivals annoy me but if I’m going to be out all day I need a place to keep my water, medication, passports etc. And I am NOT one to wear pants with lots of pockets. Make sure it’s a bag that goes over your shoulder and you can keep it close to your body so you don’t bash people with it. Sarah rarely uses bags (she’s cool like that) but if she does, it’s a brown leather messenger bag.

Yes, you can look awesome and be practical at Wacken. It just takes thought, consideration, multiple tank tops and episodes of Terminator.

So I had a bit more of a play with polyvore today. It would be quite good for when I am thinking of buying, oh say.. these awesome black clogs that are a clear Chanel rip off – and then trying to figure out what the hell they would even go with. I suppose it’s more of a summer thing? I don’t know if wooden heels would do so well in the winter. What, with all the rain and all.

Honestly, I need to be convinced. I am about to press “checkout” and own a pair of these babies. But I can’t, can I? Oh no, I suppose I should just wait. I’m sure H&M has some rip offs of these rip offs.

A simple Reddit thread about these here Keanu Reeves photos has exploded into another meme. Apparently, there are many MANY stories about Keanu Reeves buying people motorcycles, hanging out with movie crews, helping jumpstart a broken down car .. it makes me think about much this poor guy got a bad rap before. These meme’s are usually making fun of someone. You know, like David Hasselhof and Chuck Norris. Rick Roll dude. Tom Selleck (who is getting much love in the iiOffice). I mean for sure, this meme is making fun of this sad-looking photo of Keanu eating a sandwich which has since spawned sadkeanu.com. But it’s also spawned thankyoukeanu.com because he’s such a standup guy – according to all the stories about him. I mean… honestly very weird but entertaining at the same time.

When I think of it, I would look that way too if all I wanted was to eat a damn sandwich and people were taking my picture. I hate it when people watch me when I eat. Which is why I’d prefer to be alone. Maybe not quite in a toilet. But not really eating in front of people. This does wonders for me in social situations.

My mum used to have these very 80s-looking recipe cards in a huge notebook that was just a compilation of all sorts of recipes – clippings from newspapers, magazines, friends’ handwritten recipes. There was just something so organic about it.

I had intended to buy her a recipe folder for her birthday so that she could get rid of her old notebook and organise them.

Then I thought she wouldn’t like that because I realised that she liked the notebook – the yellowing pages, some falling out and the cover falling off it’s spine.

http://mingmakescupcakes.yolasite.com/ is all about yummy cupcakes. The way they are presented are just like those little recipe cards mum keeps.

I am a huge fan of all things 60s and 70s, like many others. Even though I was born in 1985, I was brought up with music from the 60s/70s era. I could be forgiven for thinking it was another time. The house I grew up in was also very late 70s and there was a certain warmth about it.

In comparison of the two styles – early to mid 70s & mid to late 70s – there is an obvious difference. As much as the lovely 1960s interior design became way too over-enthusiastic in the 70s, by the late 70s things had toned down a lot to the point of laziness. It has evolved so much that you will see that evolution in the modern houses of today – with their very clean lines and minimalistic interior design.

As an avid reader of interior decoration magazines and websites, I have noticed a slight change in this into a post-modern era of design. Homes have orange feature walls, wooden furniture, funky flip clocks and statement furniture all replicating the wonderful era of the 60s and 70s.

This image is scanned from the practical encyclopedia of good decorating and home improvement, 1970 (thanks to SuperJunk). Being snapped in 1970, obviously this is a much more minimalist and influenced by the late 60s. The colour of the chairs, mural and light act as the features of the room with their lively red colour. The rest is toned down with a massive white bookshelf using books and bowls to inject just a teensy bit of colour. The shape of the chair and it’s footstool, lamp and the mural are all unique but compliment each other making for an interesting room, but not too cluttered.

Now HERE we have a room that has almost a little too much going on. There is a lot of red, orange and white happening which were very popular back in the day (if you’ve never had a chance to rummage through your parents’ photos…). The drawers and cabinets are all different colours and yet, it makes sense. Even though there is a lot to look at in this room, the clean lines really save it as well as the white walls. I also love the magazine rack – remember Dad saying magazines were huge at the time – and how the TV is so insignificant in the room even though it’s this funky green colour and stands out from the rest. The focal point of the room is reading, creating and chatting rather than being a zombie.

Tada! This is what 1970s interior design was all about. Puke? Maybe. But every little thing was perhaps, over-designed. Way too much attention to detail makes for a whole lot of clashing. There is some crazy wallpaper going on but there is also a picture hanging from the wall. There is nothing more 70s than that. A lot of people use wallpaper to create a focal point on a bare wall. The same reason people hang up pictures. It’s either one or the other. In the 70s – it was fair game. I like to call this room, the RGB Spew Room. Could you imagine getting high in here?

I think that it’s so funny how people become completely incapable of operating a car the moment it starts sprinkling with rain.

In the morning, some guy decided he had it with people overtaking him so he drove in the middle of two lanes. I’m not exactly sure how it is he acquired a licence or a car.

In the late morning, a woman turned right onto Hay Street, Subiaco – a one way street. She got up a fair way until the lights went green further up the road and she was met with the oncoming traffic. Thankfully no one was hurt. She was in the left lane, so at least something was right.

And I’m pretty sure it took me 10 minutes longer to get home because everyone else was shitting themselves and slamming on the brakes for NO GODDAMN REASON. Come on, dudes. Even P Plate drivers are better than most of you. Yeah. That’s right. Those hooligans know something.

I once read that more people die in house fires because they panic out of fear. Their fear causes them to die of stupidity. It does happen. It’s real. I am afraid when I drive in the rain as I’m putting my life in the hands of people around me who panic out of fear.
