Horror Movie Madness! – Laid to Rest (2009)
// May 9th, 2009 // humour
Laid to Rest, Rob Hall’s latest film, has The Girl (she has no name) waking up in a coffin with a killer named Chrome Skull out to get her and anyone who stands in his way.
After The Girl gets out of the coffin, we discover that she has suffered temporary memory loss. Apparently, this also includes forgetting how to use a telephone and the name of those big boxy things that hold dead people. Chrome Skull, who’s face is covered with a – you guessed it – chrome skull mask, comes in for the kill but The Girl escapes and the chase begins.
Laid to Rest really raises the bar on how far the potential of special effects make up can go. This film goes beyond imagination as to how utterly gory some of these scenes are. No matter how many words I write about it, you will have to see it for yourself to understand what I am talking about.
Aside from the insane effects, the story isn’t half bad either. A lot of slasher films as of late forget that characters are human and the killer is scary. Laid to Rest definitely makes the audience feel for these characters – they have a genuineness about them (aside from the OTT memory loss) and you want all of them to live. The Girl, even though she almost borders on shrill and is almost so annoying you want to kill her yourself, is a rare heroine. She’s tough, and doesn’t wait for a man to come save her.
Although there are some cliched moments – this is horror, it happens – Laid to Rest is an excellent film from Rob Hall. Just don’t watch it after dinner.
